Dress Code

Garden Grove High School is a place of business where time and effort are invested to gain knowledge and ideas. As in most places of business, a person’s manner of dress influences their degree of success. The Garden Grove High School Dress Code, given below, establishes the minimum standard for student dress. We hope all parents and students will want to exceed the indicated minimums. Parents can help their student by monitoring school attire and encouraging them to “dress for success.”

In order to maintain the proper student attitude and educational spirit, students must show proper attention to personal cleanliness, health, safety, neatness of appearance, and suitability of clothing for school activities. This code applies to the school day and to all school functions outside the school day. Clothing may not be inappropriately revealing. Students must dress in a presentable manner that is not distracting or disruptive to their classmates or to their instructors.

1. Students may not wear watch/stocking caps, bandanas, hairnets, or any other headwear on campus or at school events. Sun protection may be worn outdoors only as follows: school baseball hat – red or red and white with the letters “GG” or “A” on the front above the brim. A wide-brim straw hat with no colored decorations. A white “sailor/fishing” hat with the brim turned down for protection from the sun.
2. Pants, shorts, and skirts must be fitted at the waist and worn at the waist. Shorts and skirts must be of reasonable length and no undergarments may be exposed.
3. Clothing displaying profanity, alcoholic beverages/brands, tobacco products, drugs, gangs, sexual innuendo, inappropriate gestures, or graffiti is not allowed.
4. Gang attire includes, but is not limited to: initialed belt buckles, pant legs worn up, overall bibs worn unhooked, bandannas, gloves, shorts worn below the knee with socks pulled over the calf, gothic lettering on clothing and sunglasses worn on the back of the head. Clothing may not contain images of tagging, spray cans, gang symbolism, or weapons.
5. Sleeveless undershirts or sleeveless tops with gaping armholes are not permitted.
6. Clothing that is torn or has slits that are revealing are not allowed.
7. Shirts and blouses must completely cover the midriff and all undergarments during normal activity. No spaghetti straps, low-cut necklines exposing excessive cleavage, strapless tops, halter tops, tube tops or backless tops.
8. Chains are not allowed. Jewelry and other adornments that create classroom distraction or that might be construed as a weapon are not allowed---this includes but is not limited to: swords, cake cutters, handcuffs, studded/spiked items, and long dangling earrings.
9. Footwear must have hard soles.
10. All clothing must be worn as it was intended to be worn, for example, overalls must be worn with both straps over the shoulders securing the bib. NO PAJAMAS OR SLEEPWEAR.
Parents and students are cautioned that if they have any doubts about whether an item is acceptable, it probably should not be worn to school.

Students who do not meet the minimum dress standards will be required to correct the violation. They will be asked to wear a clean shirt provided by the school, or contact their parents for assistance in modifying their dress for the day. Continued violation of the dress code will result in additional disciplinary consequences in a progressive manner.

Dance Policy

Requirements to attend Dances:
Students must be in good standing to attend dances. This means that all fines must be paid, all detentions or Saturday Schools assigned are being served, and privileges have not been revoked for disciplinary reasons.

On Campus Dances
• No guests are allowed at these dances.
• These are held on campus and require that students show their current, valid student ID.

Off Campus Dances
• Guests that are under 21 years may attend with assistant principal approval.
• Students wishing to bring guests who are 21 or older must make an appointment to see the Principal along with their guest in order to have their guest approved.

Dress for Dances:
The school dress code is still in effect for dances. Enforcement of the dress code for dances is somewhat more relaxed since classroom instruction is not involved, but clothing must be safe and appropriate for a public setting. Some specific dance-related dress code items are listed below:

• Tops with spaghetti straps are allowed, but strapless tops are not permitted.
• Undergarments should not be visible and midriffs should still be covered.
• Pants/skirts must not be baggy, low-cut, or short to the point that they become overly exposing.
• Hats, bandannas, sweat bands, or gang apparel is not permitted.

Dance Rules:
• Students must check personal belongings like purses and backpacks at the door.
• Students may leave the dance at any time, but may not return once they have left.
• No Freak dancing or Circle/Acrobatic Dancing.
• Students dancing inappropriately will be asked to leave the dance and must leave the campus within 20 minutes.
• Students asked to leave a dance will not be allowed to attend the next dance.
• Students are expected to follow all school rules while at dances.

Transportation after Dances:
• Students must be on their way home within 15 minutes after the dance. Students still remaining after that time will not be allowed to attend the next dance.

• Pay telephones are available outside “on-campus” dances, but students need to call before the dance is over if it will take more than 15 minutes for their ride to arrive.

Discipline Code

Students are expected to demonstrate appropriate behavior at all times while at school. This discipline code is established to provide students and parents information on behavioral expectations and the potential consequences of violating this code.

Discipline will be handled in a progressive and confidential manner. Inquiries concerning discipline should be directed to the assistant principal assigned to the student alphabetically based on the last name.

Concerns or questions about how a situation was handled in the classroom should be discussed first with the classroom teacher by leaving a message with the guidance office at 663-6175.

Administrators and Counselors are available to assist students and parents with problems that might arise while at school. Students are encouraged to seek out one of these individuals if they have concerns for their safety while at school.

Students should carry their school identification card (I.D.) with them at all times. It must be presented when requested by a staff member.
