Course: Digital Media Honors
Course Purpose
The Digital Media Honors course is designed to provide advanced, project-based instruction in the creation and manipulation of digital media. Students will learn the foundational principles of graphic design, photography, and video editing, applying these skills to create compelling and professional-quality work. This course emphasizes the technical skills and creative mindset required for success in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, preparing students for future studies and careers in media, design, and communications. As an honors class, the curriculum will be more rigorous, requiring a higher level of critical thinking, independent work, and portfolio development.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate proficiency with industry-standard software for graphic design, photography, and video editing.
- Apply fundamental principles of design, composition, and storytelling to create effective media.
- Develop a strong understanding of media ethics, copyright, and digital citizenship.
- Collaborate effectively with peers on a variety of digital media projects.
- Critique and analyze both their own work and the work of others.
- Build a professional portfolio showcasing a range of digital media projects.
Course Units
- Introduction to Digital Media & Design Principles: Understanding the history and impact of digital media, and learning the fundamentals of color theory, typography, and layout.
- Graphic Design: Creating vector and raster graphics for various platforms, including logos, posters, and web elements.
- Video Production & Editing: Mastering the video production workflow from pre-production to post-production, including shooting, editing, and motion graphics.
- Photography: Learning camera fundamentals, composition, and photo editing techniques to capture and enhance digital images.
- Final Portfolio Project: A culminating project where students will apply all acquired skills to create a major piece of media and present their digital portfolio.
Grading Policy
Grades will be calculated based on the following weighted categories. Students are expected to complete all assignments to receive full credit.
- Summative Projects (60%): This category includes all major, comprehensive projects that demonstrate mastery of a unit's skills and concepts. These are final, polished assignments.
- Practice Projects (40%): This category includes smaller assignments, quizzes, and daily classwork designed to reinforce skills and build a foundation for the larger summative projects.
Late Work Policy
All assignments are expected to be turned in on time. Late work will be accepted for a reduced grade. The penalty will be a 10% deduction per day, up to a maximum of 50%. After five school days, the assignment will no longer be accepted for credit. The lab is usually open at lunch time so students can make up work.
Classroom Expectations
- Respect: Treat your fellow students, your teacher, and the equipment with respect.
- Responsibility: You are responsible for your own learning and for completing your work.
- Creativity: This is a creative class! Don't be afraid to experiment, make mistakes, and learn from them.
- No Plagiarism: All work must be your own. Any use of others' work must be properly cited.
- Technology Use: All school and district policies regarding technology use will be strictly enforced.
